I have to give some credit to Ubisoft for wanting to produce a new Ninja Turtles game that took after Konami's classic arcade beat-em-ups -- their other recent TMNT games, Smash-Up and Turtles in Time Re-Shelled, weren't total failures, and for what it's worth, Konami's old TMNT games were the only ones people still fondly remember. But somehow, TMNT Arcade Attack is a big step back. The idea is sound, but the end result is a nearly lifeless action game that ironically has barely anything to do with its classic predecessors.

Cleverly, you're playing with another player in co-op -- whether or not they're real. The game makes you choose a second turtle to join you, mainly because special attacks are based around team moves. Regardless, this is a beat-em-up by definition, but not in a great way: Run up the path until a group of enemies stroll in, take a couple of minutes beating them all up, then run up the path again to meet the next wave, and so on -- no exaggeration; this is every single stage. And you don't even get to fight a boss in every one -- sometimes you just reach the end of the line for an easy victory. That's no big deal anyway, considering that the bosses don't act much different from the regular thugs, and can be just as handily beaten with a flurry of attacks.
