It's easy to keep using The Empire Strikes Back as a reference point for Mass Effect 2. They're both second acts in sci-fi trilogies, and they both adopt a darker tone compared to their predecessors. But during a brief hands-on demonstration, there's one other pop-culture reference that can describe the general atmosphere of Mass Effect 2: that Westwood College Online commercial where the two fellows talk about "tightening the graphics."

I say this because, well, the overall experience just seems "tightened," in the sense that it's been highly refined, polished, and generally constructed better. My demo starts with Shepard (with Grunt and Jacob as his squadmates) moseying around the planet Omega. If the Citadel in Mass Effect is the pinnacle of galactic civilization, then Omega is its moody invert -- to use another Star Wars reference, Omega is a "hive of scum and villainy." Shepard and company start to investigate Club Afterlife, which is basically a seedier (and more technically impressive, in terms of lighting, loadtimes, and general visual polish) version of the Citadel's Chora's Den. Though, Shepard is actually drugged by the bartender, and the demo then fast-forwards to a combat scenario with a familiar face.
