Gamers who remember Hudson for their stable of great TurboGrafx-16 games in the '80s have mostly got the retro revivals they've pined for: Alien Crush, Adventure Island, Military Madness, and now Bonk. Well, to be fair, Hudson already revived Bonk a few years ago, though it was in the form of a low-profile cell phone game didn't exactly catch the attention of hardcore gamers. But now Bonk is coming to the big platforms in the "real" game -- Bonk: Brink of Extinction, an all-new platfomring adventure (developed by Houston-based Pi Studios) for Xbox Live Arcade and WiiWare some time next year.

A playable demo of the XBLA version of Brink of Extinction was available at Hudson's 2009 Gamers' Day event, which is where I got my first opportunity to see if Bonk can still make for a good platformer. However, Hudson readily admitted that the game's still in an alpha state, so a few questionable things (like floaty controls and nigh-insurmountable level designs) will most likely be addressed by the time the game is out. So, let's focus on the more solid stuff. For one thing, Brink of Extinction looks better than early screenshots may have suggested. Those did just show one level, after all, and the ones I played and saw are less murky and take place at various times of day. While there aren't tons of graphical effects being tossed around or anything, the art style isn't a lost cause.
